K-Pop Dance Class Experience: What to Expect

The Korean Wave has washed over India with extraordinary force. Walk into any Indian college campus or school common room today and you will find students who can name BTS members, sing BLACKPINK choruses, and imitate TWICE choreography with impressive accuracy. For these students β€” and there are millions of them β€” visiting Korea means one thing above everything else: experiencing K-pop culture firsthand. And the most immersive way to do that is to join an actual K-pop dance class in Seoul.

Where to Find K-Pop Dance Classes
The Hongdae neighbourhood (ν™λŒ€) in Mapo District is Seoul's creative heart and the epicentre of K-pop dance culture for tourists. Within a few blocks of Hongdae Station (Line 2), you'll find dozens of dance academies (λŒ„μŠ€ 학원) that welcome international visitors. The best-known options include 1MILLION Dance Studio (famous for its YouTube presence) and several smaller independent studios that offer smaller group sizes and more personal attention.

What Actually Happens in Class
A typical tourist dance class lasts 60–90 minutes. The instructor begins with a warm-up, then breaks down 30–60 seconds of choreography from a current chart-topping song. The teaching method is genuinely accessible β€” moves are broken into small segments, taught slowly, repeated many times, then gradually built up to full speed. No prior dance experience is required. Many Indian students discover that their experience with Bollywood or classical Indian dance gives them a natural advantage in picking up rhythmic footwork.

The class typically concludes with a full run-through of the learned choreography, filmed by the studio against a professional backdrop, which students receive as a video keepsake. This recording invariably becomes one of the most-shared memories of the entire Korea trip.

What to Bring and Wear
Wear comfortable athletic clothes and clean trainers. Bring a water bottle and hair ties if you have long hair. Most studios have lockers or storage areas for bags.
